Phillies' Thomson gets in umpire's face during fiery ejection

Philadelphia Phillies manager Rob Thomson authored arguably the most memorable ejection so far in the 2024 campaign Sunday.

Thomson was tossed in the sixth inning against the Baltimore Orioles after the umpires ruled that a pitch didn't hit the foot of Phillies catcher Garrett Stubbs.

Thomson got in home plate umpire Mike Estabrook's face, and the two engaged in a heated back-and-forth before the manager left the field. Thomson had also taken exception to the strike zone at various points during Sunday's game.

"Mike had awarded Stubby first base," Thomson said postgame, according to The Associated Press' Noah Trister. "(Orioles manager) Brandon Hyde comes out, then the umpires get together."

Thomson objected to Estabrook saying he could use his manager's challenge if he had an issue with the decision to send Stubbs back to home plate.

"I said: 'But you've already awarded him first base. Why don't you make them use their (the Orioles') challenge?'" Thomson recounted.

The Phillies ultimately did challenge the play, and the umpires upheld the initial call that the ball didn't hit Stubbs' foot. The Phillies went on to lose 8-3, dropping the three-game series versus the Orioles.
