Mets' Díaz suspended 10 games for foreign substance

New York Mets closer Edwin Díaz was suspended 10 games and fined an undisclosed amount for violating Major League Baseball's foreign-substance policy, the league announced Monday.

Díaz elected not to appeal the ban and will begin serving the suspension Tuesday, according to Joel Sherman of the New York Post.

Díaz was ejected from Sunday's game against the Chicago Cubs after umpires inspected his hands and glove prior to the ninth inning.

The two-time All-Star said he was using a combination of rosin, sweat, and dirt on this hand. However, umpire Vic Carapazza said the substance was "way too sticky."

Díaz is the eighth pitcher suspended since MLB cracked down on foreign substances in 2021.

The 30-year-old owns a 4.70 ERA, 1.17 WHIP, and 12.9 K/9 over 23 innings this season.
