Nimmo: Mets should 'go for it' if in playoff mix at deadline

New York Mets outfielder Brandon Nimmo hopes the team prioritizes winning this season if they're in the playoff picture at the July 30 trade deadline.

"I get it that you are trying to build for next year and try to get some value out of people," Nimmo said, according to Mike Puma of the New York Post. "I get the business of baseball. But I am always going to be on the side of if you are right in that area of the playoff mix you go for it."

The Mets defeated the San Diego Padres 2-1 on Friday night and sit three games back of the final NL wild-card spot. The club is 7-4 in June after stumbling to a 9-19 record in May.

New York has several impending free agents who could fetch strong returns at the deadline if made available. Slugger Pete Alonso, pitcher Luis Severino, and designated hitter J.D. Martinez are among the players who could strongly interest other clubs.

"There is a part of me that is always going to want to roll the dice and see what happens because you never know once you get into the playoffs," Nimmo said. "We have seen it two years in a row that a wild-card team has ended up making it to the World Series."

Nimmo had two hits and a run scored in Friday's victory. The 31-year-old has seven home runs, 32 RBIs, and five stolen bases in 64 appearances this season.
