Phil Neville has cleared the way to become Inter Miami's new head coach before the 2021 Major League Soccer season kicks off, according to The Times' Matt Lawton.

The 43-year-old was due to step down as boss of the England women's national team in July, but the Football Association granted him an early exit. An FA announcement is expected this week, BBC Sport's Alistair Magowan reports.

Neville was also set to take charge of the Great Britain women's team at the 2021 Tokyo Games. However, he has relinquished that duty by deciding to kick-start his career in club management.

Reports surfaced last week that David Beckham had opened talks with Neville - a former Manchester United teammate and fellow co-owner of Salford City - regarding the Inter Miami role. The MLS franchise, which is co-owned by Beckham, then parted ways with head coach Diego Alonso last Thursday.

Alonso won two CONCACAF Champions League titles and the 2016 Clausura over spells with Liga MX sides Pachuca and Monterrey. By comparison, Neville's experience in the men's game is limited to a short stint as a caretaker manager at Salford City and unsuccessful spells on Manchester United's and Valencia's coaching staffs.

In 2019, Neville guided England to glory in the invitational SheBelieves Cup and a semifinal finish at the Women's World Cup. However, the Lionesses have won only three of their past 11 fixtures.
