Bianca Andreescu capped off her magical 2019 season with the Lou Marsh Trophy, which is given annually to Canada's athlete of the year.

A panel of Canadian media members unanimously voted the teenage star as the winner.

Andreescu is the first tennis player to receive the honor.

"Wow, I'm so thankful for this award. I was not expecting it and to be the first tennis player to win is even more surreal," Andreescu said in a statement. "None of my success this year would have been possible without the support from all of Canada.

"Canadian sports crushed it this year, so there are definitely many other athletes who deserve a piece of this award as well - we all motivate each other to be better. I can't wait for what 2020 will bring and am always proud to represent Canada at the highest level."

Andreescu began the 2019 season ranked 152nd in the world and ended it at No. 5 after reaching No. 4 in October.

In March, she became the first wild-card winner in Indian Wells tournament history and the first 18-year-old to claim the event since Serena Williams in 1999.

Andreescu followed that up with championship victories over the American legend at the Rogers Cup and US Open. In the process, she became the first Canadian to claim a Grand Slam singles title.

The Mississauga, Ontario, native finished her 2019 season with a 48-7 record despite missing time with a shoulder injury.

The other 2019 Lou Marsh Trophy finalists were golfer Brooke Henderson, St. Louis Blues goaltender Jordan Binnington, track and field sprinter Andre De Grasse, and Atlanta Braves pitcher Mike Soroka.

Andreescu is also a nominee for the WTA's Player of the Year and Newcomer of the Year awards.
