Canada's women's hockey team was without a key piece for its dominant preliminary round win over Finland on Friday, as Melodie Daoust has an upper-body injury, according to Hockey Canada.

Daoust is considered day-to-day and is expected to return at some point during the Olympic tournament. She suffered what appeared to be a shoulder injury during the second period of Canada's 12-1 win over Switzerland on Wednesday and did not return.

"Melodie continues to be assessed by our medical team and will be evaluated on a day-to-day basis before determining a timetable for her return," director of hockey operations Gina Kingsbury said. "We anticipate she will be able to return to compete at some point during the Olympic tournament."

Following Friday's 11-1 win against the Fins, Canada will play the Russian Olympic Committee Sunday and then will wrap up preliminary play against the United States on Monday.

The veteran forward is competing in her third Olympics and was named tournament MVP at PyeongChang 2018 after scoring three goals and adding four assists during Canada's silver-medal run. She recorded 6:53 of ice time and had four shots on goal against the Swiss prior to her injury.
