Ranking the 10 craziest skeleton helmets at PyeongChang 2018

With 43 percent of voters considering skeleton to be the most dangerous sport at PyeongChang 2018, the event seems to arouse more sentiments of fear than fashion.

That certainly isn't the case for the athletes themselves, as audaciously designed skeleton helmets are all the rage, with some meant to intimidate and others simply looking sharp and creative.

Here are the top 10 helmets, ranked, at PyeongChang 2018.

10. Katie Uhlaender - U.S

Uhlaender, in hopes of reaching the podium in her fourth Olympics, has kept to tradition with her American-themed helmet. It's not the flashiest choice, but she makes the cut thanks to a sleek bald eagle, complemented with red stripes.

9. Alexander Henning Hanssen - Norway

Like Uhlaender, Hanssen's helmet screams national pride. The detail alone, specifically in the lower half of the mask, earns him a top-10 ranking.

8. Mirela Rahneva - Canada

The first of many Canadian athletes to make the cut, Rahneva's moose is cool by itself, but helping her case is an incredible mix of colors. She could have gone the boring red-and-white route, but she's no slouch. This design rocks.

7. Maria Marinela Mazilu - Romania

Few have stepped up their helmet game more than Mazilu. Going from an underwhelming black design in Vancouver 2010, followed by an equally safe helmet at Sochi 2014, her choice this time around is exuberant, intimidating, and fun all at once.

6. Joseph Luke Cecchini - Italy

Cecchini loves skulls, as is evident from his similarly dark design at the Skeleton World Cup in 2017. On the big stage, his helmet, reminiscent of Ghost Rider, is certainly befitting of the event's name.

5. Dave Greszczyszyn, 4. Barrett Martineau - Canada

The second and third Canucks to make the top 10, Greszczyszyn and Martineau land in the same spot because of their comparable grizzly bear patterns. The duo rank ahead of fellow Canadian Mirela Rahneva because a roaring bear is objectively more terrifying than a moose, cool colors aside.

3. Kevin Boyer - Canada

Slotting directly ahead of Greszczyszyn and Martineau is Boyer, an Alberta native, and the fourth Canadian to crack the list. Moose and grizzly bears are one thing, but Boyer's sleek and creative Beaver-inspired Haida design is, by far, the coolest Canadian look. The green and gold also pays homage to his Edmonton roots, with the CFL's Eskimos donning similar colors.

2. Sungbin Yun - South Korea

Yun didn't just win gold in his native Korea, his Iron Man helmet has gone viral. There isn't much background to the selection as the 23-year-old simply loves the Armored Avenger. This isn't the first Olympian to don a look honoring a superhero, as American and giant slalom gold medalist Mikaela Shiffrin proved with her Captain Marvel-inspired ski suit.

1. Akwasi Frimpong - Ghana

As great as it is to see Ghana send an athlete to represent the country at a winter sport, it's significantly better when the individual competes in his first-ever Olympics donning the event's best helmet.

Frimpong, the only Ghanaian competing at PyeongChang 2018, failed to qualify for the fourth run, but his helmet, a metaphor he's used as motivation ahead of the games, steals the show.
