Cuba and Italy advanced to the quarterfinals of the World Baseball Classic on Sunday after Pool A ended in a five-way tie following Italy's 7-1 victory over the Netherlands.

All teams in the group finished with a 2-2 record, with Cuba and Italy advancing based on the runs allowed tiebreaker.

Cuba officially won the pool, which means it squares off against the second-place finisher of Pool B, while Italy is set to play Japan.

The Netherlands failed to advance to the quarterfinals for the first time since 2006. It reached the semifinals in 2013 and 2017.
