Atlanta United severed ties Wednesday with the most decorated player in club history, releasing Josef Martinez, the club confirmed.

Shortly after, Inter Miami announced that they've signed Martinez.

"I'm excited for the opportunity to represent Inter Miami and give the best of myself," Martinez said. "This is a club with high aspirations and that aims to be amongst the best in the league. I hope to help the team achieve its objectives and leave my mark at the club."

The Venezuelan striker scored 111 goals in 158 games after joining Atlanta in 2017. He was named Major League Soccer's Most Valuable Player in 2018.

Martinez also helped Atlanta win the MLS Cup in 2018 - the same season he captured the league's golden boot award.

But Martinez's memorable spell in Atlanta came to an end after the club exercised a buyout option in his contract, which frees up a Designated Player slot.

"He was a foundational piece who was responsible for helping build our brand into what it is today," Atlanta vice president and technical director Carlos Bocanegra said. "We cannot thank him enough for his contributions to the club and the community over the last six years."

Inter Miami will unveil Martinez to supporters Saturday during halftime of the team's preseason match against Brazilian side Vasco da Gama.
