Canada recorded another important victory in World Cup qualifying, beating Costa Rica 1-0 in Edmonton on Friday.

Jonathan David scored in the second half to decide the contest and extend Canada's unbeaten run.

John Herdman's squad dominated from the opening whistle, controlling possession and creating scoring chances at will against a disjointed Costa Rica side.

But the host couldn't find the back of the net until the 57th minute when David pounced on goalkeeper Leonel Moreira's error and finished from close range.

The Canadians had been knocking on the door leading up to David's strike, as Tajon Buchanan's acrobatic overhead effort struck the crossbar moments before.

Canada remains undefeated after seven matches and sits third in CONCACAF qualifying with 13 points. The nation hasn't qualified for the World Cup since 1986.

The United States sits atop the group via goal differential after leapfrogging Mexico with a 2-0 win over El Tri on Friday.
