Canadian star Alphonso Davies will miss his nation's crucial World Cup qualifier against El Salvador on Wednesday due to injury, the team announced.

Davies suffered an undisclosed ailment in the second half of Sunday's 1-1 draw with the United States, falling to the turf and appearing to favor his left leg after a seemingly innocuous sequence of play in the 72nd minute.

As the primary attacking threat for John Herdman's side, Davies recorded the assist on Cyle Larin's equalizer Sunday night against the Americans.

The versatile 20-year-old will return to Bayern Munich to continue his recovery.

Tajon Buchanan could be in line for a starting berth with Davies sidelined.

Canada goes into Wednesday's contest at BMO Field in Toronto with two points in as many matches. The team is playing the final stage of CONCACAF qualifying for next year's showpiece event in Qatar.

Ranked 59th in the world, the Canadians are looking to reach the men's World Cup for the first time since their lone appearance in 1986.
