CONMEBOL president wants World Cup held every 2 years

FIFA's grandiose competition could be played twice as often if CONMEBOL president Alejandro Dominguez gets his way.

The head of South American football's governing body confirmed Friday that his association has proposed to FIFA to halve the time between editions of the World Cup, asking for the tournament to be staged every two years as opposed to its current quadrennial timeline.

"The proposal we have made to FIFA is to play the World Cup every two years and not every four," Dominguez said, according to Jonathan Wilson of The Guardian. "Instead of having the Nations League in between we can just go ahead every two years and have a World Cup and that is for everyone."

Dominguez pointed out how stars could, theoretically, participate in twice as many World Cups before hanging up their boots.

"It's for the players because they could play four World Cups if we move to a two-year cycle," he said. "If we stay with this format many players will not be able to play more than two."

In addition, Dominguez added that the move would be financially beneficial.

"In terms of economics FIFA (will) make money and give more money," he said.

FIFA's international showcase has been held every four years at some point between May and July since Uruguay hosted the inaugural edition in 1930. The only exceptions to the four-year cycle were when the tournament was skipped in 1942 and 1946 due to World War II. The World Cup is scheduled to be played in the winter for the first time when Qatar serves as host in 2022.
