Danny Lee got off to a smoking-hot start at the Mayakoba Classic, firing a 9-under 62 in Round 1 to grab an early one-shot lead in Mexico.

Lee was out early Friday morning and took advantage of the soft conditions at El Camaleon Golf Club after rain completely washed out first-round play Thursday. The New Zealander carded five birdies and an eagle to make the turn at 29. He played the back nine at 2-under par to get in the clubhouse at 62.

The 29-year-old finished second to Matt Kuchar in last year's event, during which he shot 65 in the final round. Lee is looking for his second PGA Tour title.

Brendon Todd and Adam Long share second place at 8-under par. Todd won two weeks ago at the Bermuda Championship for his first victory since 2014.

Here's how the top of the leaderboard stands after Round 1:

Place Player To Par R1 Score
1 Danny Lee -9 62
T2 Brendon Todd -8 63
T2 Adam Long -8 63
T4 Vaughn Taylor -7 64
T4 Mark Hubbard -7 64
T4 Zach Johnson -7 64
T4 Chris Baker -7 64
T8 Billy Horschel -6 65
T8 Harris English -6 65

Kuchar shot a 2-under 69 in Round 1 of his title defense.

Notables Jason Day, Tony Finau, and Kevin Kisner struggled to respective 1-under 70s to kick off their week in Mexico.
