Germany's Marcel Siem disqualified himself from the French Open on Thursday after thinking preferred lies were in place for the tournament's first round.

The 39-year-old lifted, cleaned, and placed his ball on five separate occasions on the front nine, incurring a total of 10 penalty strokes. Before adding in the penalties, he'd shot a 1-over 37 at Le Golf National.

"That was a little too much for me and I disqualified myself," Siem said on Facebook, according to Golf Channel's Ryan Lavner. "I thought I owed you the explanation."

The disqualification comes at an inopportune time for the former 51st-ranked player in the world. He's battling to earn his European Tour card and will now have to attempt the feat through the circuit's qualification process.

Siem wasn't the only professional to be penalized with an astounding amount of strokes this week. Lee Ann Walker was docked 58 strokes at the Senior LPGA Championship on Wednesday for continually breaking the new caddie-alignment rule.
