After a hard-fought victory at the U.S. Open, all Gary Woodland wanted to do was celebrate and honor tradition by drinking from the trophy.
Unfortunately, the 35-year-old couldn't figure out how to open the top of the trophy, even with assistance from former U.S. Open winner Jordan Spieth.
"Jordan Spieth was with me so I'll blame him," Woodland said on Barstool Sports' "Fore Play" podcast, which aired on Thursday. "We didn't know how to get the top off. I've seen people drink out of it before, but we actually drank out of the bottom cup, upside down."
"It was nice to relax a little bit, open up the cup, and get some liquid going," Woodland said, later adding: "The USGA came up and they told us we were doing it wrong and they showed us how to get the top off. So we finally did get the top off and drank the right way."
What was Woodland's drink of choice?
"We had a bottle of vodka in there. It fit very nicely," he said.
