Viktor Hovland carded a final-round 67 for a tournament total of 280 to break Jack Nicklaus' record by two shots for the lowest score by an amateur at the U.S. Open.

Hovland, who was also the low amateur at the 2019 Masters, birdied his final hole to finish Round 4 in a tie for 13th. When Nicklaus first set the record in 1960, he finished in second.

The 21-year-old Norwegian earned his spot in the field this week by winning the 2018 U.S. Amateur, which was also held at Pebble Beach. He spent the last three years playing for the dominant Oklahoma State Cowboys team.

He's the No. 1 ranked amateur in the world but will give up that title once he makes his professional debut on the PGA Tour next week at the Travelers Championship.
