Koepka retains 7-shot lead ahead of final round at PGA Championship

Brooks Koepka didn't have his best stuff on Saturday, but it didn't matter. The leader fired an even-par 70 and still retained his enormous seven-shot lead heading into the final round at the PGA Championship.

It was clear the defending champion didn't have his A-game on the first hole, at least with his putter. Instead of sending an early message, he missed a 6-foot birdie putt. He did manage to put two circles on the card over the next seven holes before again showing signs of being human.

Koepka made back-to-back bogeys on Nos. 9 and 10, with one coming off a missed putt inside three feet. But he'd built such a large advantage that two dropped shots hardly made a difference.

In three days, Koepka has already set the course record at Bethpage Black with a 63 in Round 1 and set the major championship scoring record through 36 holes with a 128-stroke total. He now enters Sunday with the largest lead in PGA Championship history.

With his seven-shot lead, the 29-year-old is on the brink of an unprecedented victory: A win on Sunday would make him the first player to ever win back-to-back U.S. Opens and PGA Championships. He would also join Tiger Woods, Jack Nicklaus, and Ben Hogan as the only players since 1934 to win four majors in eight starts.

Dustin Johnson is the most notable player who still appears to have any chance of stealing the Wanamaker Trophy from Koepka. Johnson sits at 5-under and likely needs a miracle to catch the leader.
