Matt Every: 'Maybe like 5 guys' are more talented than me

Eric Bolte-USA TODAY Sports

Matt Every is good at giving a soundbite, and he provided a few more gems Thursday at the Wyndham Championship.

Every carded a career-low 61 in the opening round, grabbing the early lead in final event before the FedEx Cup playoffs, and believes his ability is up there with the best in the world.

"I have a high regard for my talent," Every told reporters after the opening round. "I know ... I'm as talented as anyone out here ... maybe like five guys are a little more talented other than me."

The former Florida Gator is a two-time PGA Tour winner, but has missed 47 cuts since his last win in 2014 at the Arnold Palmer Invitational. Despite the recent struggles, Every said quitting the game was never an option for him.

"I couldn't let myself quit, there's a lot of low points. It's life. Everything that I have been through, I've brought on myself. So, I don't need any sympathy or anything ... it's just the way my path has gone."

The main reason behind Every's troubles has been with the driver, causing the 33-year-old to lock up midway through the swing. However, while others would seek help from another player, Every did no such thing in attempting to correct the problem

"Everyone else out here has their own deal, they don't give a s--- about me," added Every.
