Watch: Tanihara needs 3 attempts to escape Birkdale bunker

Hideto Tanihara paid the price Thursday for trying to be a little too cute at The Open.

Tanihara tugged his tee shot on the par-3 14th into the left greenside bunker, leaving a fairly straightforward shot from the hazard. However, the 38-year-old Japanese tour pro left his first shot short of the green. After watching his ball roll back to his feet, Tanihara tried to execute the same shot, but again experienced an identical result.

With his third try from the trap, Tanihara hit it past the flag, and would walk off the green with a triple-bogey six.
