Japanese citizens continue to push back against the Tokyo Olympics.

With the Summer Games set to begin in just over two months, protestors took to the streets in Tokyo on Monday to rally for the cancellation of the event.

The protests come amid a recent survey conducted in Japan that shows 80% of citizens are against the Olympics beginning this summer as scheduled, according to Agence France-Presse.

A surge in COVID-19 cases in major Japanese cities is the primary reason for the increased opposition, according to TMZ.

The Japanese government extended its state of emergency from May 11 to May 31 as a result of the spike.

Olympic organizers received a petition last week that collected 350,000 signatures in nine days calling for the cancellation of the games.

Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga said Friday that the Olympics will go ahead as planned despite the recent surge in COVID-19 cases.
