Report: Jets not close to acquiring Rodgers from Packers
The New York Jets and Green Bay Packers are not close to agreeing on a trade for 10-time Pro Bowl quarterback Aaron Rodgers, ESPN's Adam Schefter reports.
The holdup in the deal involves the Packers' stance on appropriate compensation for their longtime signal-caller, Schefter adds.
Rodgers announced Wednesday he intends to play for the Jets in 2023 and that the two teams have been working on a trade.
The 39-year-old's future has been the topic of the offseason. He said Wednesday the Packers told him after the 2022 campaign that they wanted him to finish his career with the organization, but he felt their feelings changed once he came out of a darkness retreat in February.
"When I came out of the darkness, something changed," Rodgers said. "I go back to my phone after five days off of it ... I realized that there had been a little bit of a shift. And I heard from multiple people that I trust around the league, players mostly, that there (was) some shopping going on, that (the Packers) were actually interested in moving me."
He added: "The facts are, they want to move on, and now, so do I."
Rodgers also admitted he felt "90 percent" sure he would retire before entering the darkness retreat.
The Jets have been in hot pursuit of Rodgers, with members of the front office and coaching staff flying out to see him last week. A move to New York would reunite Rodgers with former Packers offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett.
New York currently only has two quarterbacks on the roster: former No. 2 overall pick Zach Wilson and Chris Streveler.
Rodgers has spent his entire 18-year career with the Packers. He began his NFL career as a backup for franchise great Brett Favre before taking over and authoring a decorated resume that includes four MVP awards and one Super Bowl championship.
Favre also went on to play for the Jets after Rodgers succeeded him in 2008. Jordan Love is set to become Green Bay's starting quarterback if the team deals Rodgers to New York.
