Former Carolina Panthers general manager Marty Hurney is the top candidate to assume the same role for the Washington Football Team, sources told NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

Hurney is reportedly meeting with Washington head coach Ron Rivera and other team officials Monday. Rivera and Hurney previously worked together with Carolina.

Washington didn't hire a general manager in 2020; Rivera led football operations while vice president of player personnel Kyle Smith oversaw the draft. The franchise planned to hire a GM this offseason to support Rivera, who should retain roster control.

Hurney had two stints as the Panthers' general manager, first filling the role from 2002-12 before returning in 2017. Carolina fired him in December as the team sank to its third consecutive losing season.

While the Panthers were looking for a more analytics-minded executive when they dismissed Hurney, Washington is rooted in more traditional scouting techniques under Rivera.
