The Houston Texans claimed cornerback Vernon Hargreaves, a former first-round pick, off waivers from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the team announced Tuesday.

Hargreaves was drafted 11th overall in 2016 but never lived up to expectations in Tampa. He was benched Sunday for a lack of hustle and was waived two days later.

Hargreaves represents the second notable in-season cornerback acquisition for the Texans this year. Houston also acquired Gareon Conley, a first-round pick in 2017, from the Oakland Raiders before the trade deadline.

The Texans have struggled with injuries in the secondary throughout the season. They've started Johnathan Joseph and Bradley Roby at cornerback when healthy.

In nine games with the Bucs this year, Hargreaves notched 40 tackles and one interception. He has two interceptions to his name over 35 career games.
