Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton will miss his second straight game with a foot injury, and his absence could extend beyond Week 4.

"What Cam needs right now is time and rest for his foot," head coach Ron Rivera said Monday in a news release. "We want him at 100% when he's ready, so there's no exact timetable for his return. At this point, we're going to go forward with Kyle (Allen) as our starter."

Newton sat out the Panthers' first win of the season Sunday as Carolina toppled the Arizona Cardinals 38-20 in the desert. In his place, Allen threw four touchdowns.

Newton sprained his left foot in the preseason but recovered in time to start the regular season. He struggled through the first two games and told the team he aggravated the foot injury in Week 2.

The Panthers travel to face the Houston Texans in Week 4 before returning home to host the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 5 and Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 6.
