The Detroit Lions will sign former New England Patriots defensive end Trey Flowers in free agency, a source told ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Flowers will receive a five-year, $90-million contract that includes $56 million guaranteed, according to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero. $40 million in guarantees will come upon signing.

The 25-year-old had been a key cog in New England's defense since being a fourth-round draft pick in 2015, winning two Super Bowls with the franchise.

He accumulated 7.5 sacks and three forced fumbles last year while also thriving in run defense.

Meanwhile, Detroit had a glaring need at defensive end, as veteran Ezekiel Ansah is unlikely to return for 2019.

The Lions' reported signing of Flowers continues general manager Bob Quinn and head coach Matt Patricia's recent trend of bringing in former New England players from their days on the team's staff. Detroit signed wide receiver Danny Amendola on Monday and is reportedly close to a deal with slot cornerback Justin Coleman.
