Report: Mack not expected at Raiders' mandatory minicamp

Brace Hemmelgarn / USA TODAY Sports

Oakland Raiders defensive end Khalil Mack is not expected to attend his team's mandatory minicamp this week as he seeks a new contract extension, sources told NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

Mack's rookie contract is set to expire after the 2018 season and will pay the former Defensive Player of the Year around $13.8 for the campaign. The 27-year-old has been the unquestioned leader of the Raiders' defense over the past three seasons, tallying 36.5 sacks and eight forced fumbles in that time.

Along with Mack, Los Angeles Rams defensive tackle Aaron Donald and Houston Texans defensive end Jadeveon Clowney are also waiting for new contracts that could make any one of the three elite talents the NFL's highest-paid defender. Whoever is first to sign will likely soon watch his peers get better salaries, so the negotiations between the players and their teams could take some time. Denver Broncos linebacker Von Miller is currently the league's highest-paid defender with an average annual salary of just over $19 million.
