Denver Broncos owner Greg Penner and Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh met in person last week but were unable to reach a deal, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.

Penner traveled to Ann Arbor to meet with Harbaugh face-to-face after conducting a video interview. However, Harbaugh pulled himself from the running and decided to return to Michigan following the first virtual meeting, according to Schefter.

Harbaugh agreed to the in-person meeting nine days after he recommitted to Michigan, according to Mike Klis of 9NEWS.

"I love the relationships that I have at Michigan - coaches, staff, families, administration, President Ono, and especially the players and their families," Harbaugh said via the Wolverines' Twitter account. "My heart is at the University of Michigan."

The Broncos shifted their focus to other candidates, including former New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton.

This marks back-to-back years that Harbaugh has shown interest in returning to the NFL. He and the Minnesota Vikings also had discussions in 2022 about their head coaching vacancy.

Harbaugh has a 74-25 record in eight seasons as the Wolverines' head coach.
