Former Miami coach Manny Diaz expressed his disappointment through a statement on social media hours after being fired Monday.

"I am disappointed in the university's decision and the manner in which this played out over the last few weeks," Diaz said. "The uncertainty impacted our team, our staff, and their families - these are real people that gave everything to this program. For that, for them, I hurt."

The 47-year-old led the Hurricanes to a 21-15 record during his three seasons at the helm.

Miami reportedly pursued Diaz's replacement without informing the coach of his status or the school's intention following the conclusion of the 2021 campaign.

"We are grateful to coach Diaz for his many contributions to our campus community and to his native South Florida, and for the strong leadership and exemplary character he exhibited during his tenure at the university," school president Julio Frenk said in a statement.

The Hurricanes hired Oregon's Mario Cristobal to be their new head coach earlier Monday.

Despite being upset about how his tenure ended, Diaz is proud of what the program accomplished during his time as head coach. He also said he believes the Hurricanes are poised for a breakout 2022 season.

Diaz's departure comes a few weeks after the Hurricanes parted with athletic director Blake James. Miami is conducting a search for James’ replacement, with Clemson's Dan Radakovich the leading candidate.

Diaz took over the defensive play-calling responsibilities in 2021, which marked the first campaign he served in both roles since he became head coach in 2019. The Hurricanes allowed 28.4 points and 389.6 yards per game this season.

Miami finished with a 7-5 mark and will play Washington State in the Sun Bowl on Dec. 31.
