Nebraska quarterback Adrian Martinez is entering the transfer portal, he announced Thursday.

"The University of Nebraska will always be a place I can call home," Martinez wrote in a social media post.

He added, "I want to thank Coach (Scott) Frost, (quarterbacks coach Mario) Verduzco, and the rest of the staff for giving me an opportunity to play for such a great university. Thank you to my teammates and my lifelong friends for making my time here special. Thank you to the people of Nebraska for the continued support throughout my journey."

Martinez exits Nebraska with a 14-24 record as a starter. He ranks second in career passing yards (8,495) and has the fourth-most rushing yards (2,288) in school history. The California native passed for 45 touchdowns over the course of four seasons.

The three-time team captain finished the 2021 season having thrown for 2,863 yards, 14 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions.

Martinez fought through many injuries, most notably playing through a broken jaw he suffered early in the Cornhuskers' Sept. 25 overtime loss to Michigan State. He underwent season-ending surgery Nov. 24 to repair a shoulder injury sustained in a loss to Wisconsin.

He leaves the program less than a month after Nebraska fired four assistant coaches, including Verduzco.

Martinez will enter the portal with one season of eligibility remaining.
