TCU's Patterson upset with SMU for flag-planting that led to brawl

TCU head coach Gary Patterson shared his frustration with SMU for its role in a postgame brawl between the two teams last weekend.

SMU players attempted to plant the school's flag at midfield following their 42-34 win against the Horned Frogs.

Patterson said Tuesday that assistant coach Jerry Kill suffered a concussion after being knocked down twice during the fight, according to Drew Davison of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.

"I cannot substantiate that it was a SMU or TCU person, but it did happen," Patterson said Tuesday. "If we wouldn't have had the flags, it wouldn't have happened. OK?"

Patterson took further umbrage with SMU for using his song, "Take A Step Back," to troll his team on Twitter.

"They hate you 'cause they take a song that you wrote about COVID and getting back to families and they make fun of you," he said. "If I had the time, I'd go out and get all the copyright laws and I'd get after their ass but I've got (Texas) on my mind right now. Not them."

Patterson added that SMU coach Sonny Dykes, a former TCU offensive analyst in 2017, didn't reach out to him after the game.

"Sonny has been a good friend of mine," he said. "I was disappointed that the (athletic director) got a call, I never got a call about Jerry (Kill) getting hit."

However, Patterson isn't letting the incident ruin his friendship with Dykes.

"I still consider him a friend," he said. "I'm going to go forward with it."
