Kansas State quarterback Skylar Thompson will miss the remainder of the season after undergoing surgery for an upper-body injury, head coach Chris Klieman announced Monday, per Bruce Feldman of The Athletic.

Will Howard will take over the team's starting duties.

Losing Thompson is a major blow to Kansas State, who sits at 3-0 and in first place in the Big 12.

Thompson, who suffered an injury in the second quarter of last week’s 31-21 win over Texas Tech, did not travel for Saturday’s game at TCU. Howard led the Wildcats to a 21-14 victory.

The 23-year-old became only the second Kansas State quarterback in history to eclipse 5,000 passing yards and 1,000 rushing yards in his career before he exited vs. Texas Tech. He has 30 career starts for the Wildcats.

The injured quarterback finishes the season with 626 yards and four touchdowns against zero interceptions. He also has 38 rushing yards and three touchdowns on 19 carries.
