The Big 12 announced Friday that the conference's board of directors approved a three-phase plan that allows football players to return to campuses for voluntary workouts starting June 15.

Student-athletes in soccer, volleyball, and cross country can return July 1, while all other eligible student-athletes can return July 15.

"This phased approach is intended to permit gradual adoption of best practices for mitigation of COVID-19 as well as ensuring a safe environment and appropriately prepared facilities," the statement reads.

The Big 12's decision comes shortly after the SEC voted Friday to allow in-person athletic activities on school campuses beginning June 8. Meanwhile, the Big Ten is expected to allow individual schools to decide when workouts can begin.

The Big 12 suspended all athletic competitions on March 12 due to the coronavirus pandemic.
