Report: Clemson gives Venables biggest contract for assistant in CFB

Joshua S. Kelly / USA TODAY Sports

Clemson agreed to a five-year, $11.6-million extension with defensive coordinator Brent Venables, giving him the richest contract for an assistant coach at a public university, sources told Pete Thamel of Yahoo Sports.

Private schools aren't required to disclose coaching salaries.

Venables, who won the 2016 Broyles Award as the nation's top assistant coach, has played an integral role in Clemson's recent rise to superiority.

His new contract will place him second in average annual salary among assistant coaches behind LSU defensive coordinator Dave Aranda, but his total haul of $11.6 million surpasses Aranda's $10-million pact.

Venables, known for his fiery sideline behavior, is believed to have attracted head coaching interest from various schools over the last couple of years.
