St. John's is parting ways with head coach Mike Anderson after four seasons with the program, the school announced on Friday, according to basketball insider Adam Zagoria.

“After fully evaluating the men’s basketball program, our University has decided a change is needed in both the leadership and direction of St. John’s Basketball," said Athletic Director Mike Cragg, "We wish Coach Mike Anderson and his family the best in their future.”

Anderson failed to bring the Red Storm to an NCAA Tournament during his tenure, and never won more than 18 games in a season.

The team's 2022-23 season came to a close on Thursday in a 72-70 overtime loss to top-seeded Marquette in the second round of the Big East Tournament. The Red Storm finished the year at 18-15, with a 7-12 record in conference play.

St. John's brought Anderson over from Arkansas, where he coached for eight seasons, leading the Razorbacks to the Big Dance three times. He's also manned the sidelines at UAB and Missouri.

The Red Storm have failed to advance to the Round of 64 since 2015, spanning Anderson's four seasons and four campaigns led by program legend Chris Mullin.

The New York-based school is expected to target a homecoming for current Iona coach Rick Pitino, sources told CBS Sports' Jon Rothstein.

The well-known coach is from the New York area and has won two NCAA Tournament championships, with Kentucky in 1996, and Louisville in 2013.
