After reportedly spending months plotting the move, Texas and Oklahoma formally submitted requests Tuesday to join the SEC in 2025.

"We believe that there would be mutual benefit to the universities on the one hand, and the SEC on the other hand, for the universities to become members of the SEC," their joint letter to commissioner Greg Sankey said.

The Longhorns and Sooners already informed the Big 12 they won't renew media rights with the conference, paving the way for their respective exits.

The two schools would strengthen what is already widely viewed as the strongest football conference in the NCAA. Oklahoma has won the last six Big 12 football championships.

"While the SEC has not proactively sought new members, we will pursue significant change when there is a clear consensus among our members that such actions will further enrich the experiences of our student-athletes and lead to greater academic and athletic achievement across our campuses," Sankey said in a statement.

"The presidents and chancellors of the SEC, in their capacity as the conference's chief executive officers, will consider these requests in the near future."

The conference needs at least three-quarters of its 14 schools to vote in favor of extending an invitation for membership, according to SEC bylaws.
