The Sunflower Showdown didn't live up to its billing.

A turbulent brawl overshadowed the No. 3 Kansas Jayhawks' 81-60 victory over the Kansas State Wildcats on Tuesday.

The benches cleared after Jayhawks big man Silvio De Sousa appeared to mock Wildcats guard DaJuan Gordon in the dying seconds of the game, prompting absolute mayhem to break out.

Kansas head coach Bill Self acknowledged postgame he'll be penalizing his players for their role in the fight.

"I know we were in the wrong. ... That was an embarrassment on our part for the role that we played in it," Self said.

"Regardless of how it got started, that's no way for mature men to act," Self added, according to The Kansas City Star's Jesse Newell.

Kansas athletic director Jeff Long issued the following statement following the fight, per Newell:

The conduct of a few of our student-athletes at the conclusion of tonight's game vs. Kansas State was simply unacceptable and not reflective of who we are. Coach Self and I will review the incident, along with the Big 12 Conference and Kansas State to determine appropriate consequences. There is no place for this conduct in college athletics or here at KU. I would like to apologize to the Big 12 Conference, Kansas State University, Gene Taylor, Bruce Weber and all fans for the lack of sportsmanship from members of our team this evening.

Following Self's media session, Kansas State head coach Bruce Weber took responsibility for his team's role in the incident.

Lost in all the dramatics, Christian Braun scored a career-high 20 points for the Jayhawks while Devon Dotson chipped in 18 to help Kansas improve to 15-3 on the season.

Meanwhile, the loss dropped Kansas State's record to 8-10.
