NCAA proposes moving men's 3-point line to international standard

The NCAA Men's Basketball Rules Committee unveiled several proposals for rule changes Friday ahead of the 2019-20 season, including increasing the distance of the 3-point arc.

"After gathering information over the last two seasons, we feel it's time to make the change," Colorado coach Tad Boyle, who serves as the committee chair, said, according to a release from the NCAA. "Freedom of movement in the game remains important, and we feel this will open up the game. We believe this will remove some of the congestion on the way to the basket."

The proposal calls for increasing the distance of the 3-point line from 20 feet, 9 inches to 22 feet, 1 3/4 inches - the same distance used in international play. The longer 3-point line was used during the past two iterations of the National Invitation Tournament and received positive feedback from coaches, according to the NCAA.

If implemented, the rule would go into effect immediately in Division I and in time for the 2020-21 season in Divisions II and III.

Another major recommendation put forth by the committee is resetting the shot clock to 20 seconds after an offensive rebound rather than the current standard of 30. The NBA made a similar rule change prior to the 2018-19 season, as the league now resets the shot clock to 14 seconds rather than its previous standard of 24.
