The NBA is considering a rule change that would award one free throw to a team negatively impacted by a transition take foul and allow it to retain possession of the basketball, The Athletic's Shams Charania reports.

Defenders commit deliberate fouls to prevent opponents from scoring easy transition buckets. Affected teams are currently forced to restart possessions by inbounding from the sideline.

The NBA's Board of Governors is set to vote on the new transition take foul rule in July.

Additionally, the NBA is continuing discussions over a new in-season tournament that could be introduced ahead of the 2023-24 campaign, Charania adds. Reports surrounding an in-season tournament date back to 2019.
