The NBA hopes to set March 25 as its trade deadline for the 2020-21 season, sources told The Athletic's Shams Charania.

The preferred date still requires approval from the league's board of governors.

Additionally, April 9 will be the deadline for players to be waived and remain eligible for another team's postseason roster, according to Charania.

The trade and waiver deadlines are two of the major dates that have yet to be announced as the league prepares to begin an abbreviated 72-game season on Dec. 22.

With the start of the 2020-21 campaign delayed from mid-October to late December, the upcoming season's playoffs are set to begin with a new play-in tournament starting on May 18, with the traditional playoff format following on May 22.
