AD decides not to put social justice statement on jersey

Los Angeles Lakers star Anthony Davis won't be putting a social justice statement on the back of his jersey to replace his last name.

"I think the name Davis is something that I try to represent every time I try to step on the floor, my family," Davis told reporters during a video conference call Sunday, including ESPN's Dave McMenamin.

Teammate LeBron James also didn't pick any of the 29 statements the NBA and its players' association approved, saying the available choices "didn't seriously resonate with my mission."

Last week, NBPA executive director Michele Roberts said 17 players decided not to put a social justice message on the back of their jerseys.

"I didn't know what to decide: Should I have a social justice message or should I have my last name there? I just think my last name is something that is very important to me," Davis said. "Also social justice as well."

"But just holding my family name and representing the name on the back to go through this process and my name and people who've been with me through my entire career to help me get to this point," he added. "While still kind of bringing up things that we can do for social injustice."

The jerseys used in each team's opening game will be auctioned off, with proceeds going to a player-administered social justice fund.
