Raptors' Ujiri won't be charged over altercation with deputy in Finals

The Alameda County District Attorney's office said Tuesday it will not charge Toronto Raptors president Masai Ujiri over his altercation in June with an Alameda County deputy in Oakland, according to Kristofer Noceda of the NBC Bay Area.

"The district attorney’s office has determined that no criminal charges will be filed in the matter," spokesperson Teresa Drenick said in a statement. "However, Mr. Ujiri attended a meeting with the district attorney’s office focused on matters that we believe merited constructive, structured mediation and conflict resolution and were better handled in a setting outside of the courtroom."

The incident between Ujiri and the deputy took place immediately following the Raptors' Game 6 win over the Golden State Warriors, where Toronto secured its first NBA title in franchise history.

As Ujiri made his way to the floor to celebrate, he was stopped by a deputy who requested to see his credentials; the deputy claimed Ujiri shoved and struck him after he failed to present proper identification.

Video of the incident's aftermath appears to show Ujiri shoving the officer away. Several people then intervene to restrain the deputy from the Raptors president before he gets pulled onto the court by Kyle Lowry to partake in the team's celebrations.

In passing off the investigation, the sheriff's office said it would likely recommend a charge of battery against a peace officer for Ujiri, though the decision would ultimately be made by the district attorney's office.

"I'm going to respect what the process is there," Ujiri said about the altercation at his end-of-season press conference in June, according to The Canadian Press. "I am confident about who I am as a person, my character and as a human being.

"I'm going to leave my comments until the whole investigation is done. I think that's the fair way and the right way to operate when things like this happen. I'll respect authority and wait until that happens."
