Raptors won't give championship rings to Valanciunas, Wright, Miles

Not every member of the 2018-19 Toronto Raptors is getting championship jewelry.

General manager Bobby Webster revealed Saturday the organization will not be awarding rings to center Jonas Valanciunas, guard Delon Wright, and swingman CJ Miles, according to The Toronto Sun's Mike Ganter. The three all opened the year with Toronto last season but were traded to the Memphis Grizzlies in February in exchange for Marc Gasol.

"It's not an easy decision but, to be honest, I think it's standard," Webster said. "I mean we did our homework, we talked to teams and I think - I don't remember - there was maybe one scenario where a team offered one. I think it was Anderson Varejao in Golden State but I think it was a really unique circumstance."

In Varejao's situation, the Brazilian played 14 games for the Warriors during the 2016-17 season but was waived by the team in February 2017. Golden State went on to win the title in June and the team offered Varejao his own ring, which he accepted the next season.

Among the three former Raptors, Valanciunas had been with the team the longest. The Lithuanian was drafted fifth overall in 2011 but didn't join the club until the 2012-13 season.

On the 2018-19 squad, Valanciunas was second only to stalwart guard Kyle Lowry among the longest-tenured Raptors. He even mentioned over the summer that Lowry had asked him his ring size, suggesting he was set to receive a piece of memorabilia.

"I asked him 'What, wedding ring?'" he said jokingly while at the FIBA World Cup in August, according to The Canadian Press' Lori Ewing. "We'll see. I'm hopeful."
