The Los Angeles Lakers have officially hired veteran bench boss Frank Vogel as the 27th head coach in franchise history, the team announced Monday.

"We are excited to add Frank Vogel as the next head coach of the Lakers," general manager Rob Pelinka said in a statement. "Coach Vogel has a proven track record of success in the NBA playoffs and he reflects the core qualities we were looking for in a head coach including detailed game preparation, extreme hard work, and holding players accountable to the highest basketball standards."

Vogel's staff will include former Milwaukee Bucks head coach Jason Kidd, league sources told ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski. The Hall of Fame point guard's hiring has not been confirmed by the team.

Though only 45 years old, Vogel has plenty of NBA head coaching experience. He amassed a record of 250-181 through parts of six seasons with the Indiana Pacers from 2010-16, qualifying for the postseason in all but one of those campaigns and garnering four Eastern Conference Coach of the Month honors.

His more recent stint with the Orlando Magic was less successful; the team went 54-110 under his purview from 2016-18, finishing well outside of playoff contention both years.

The Lakers initially appeared to be closing in on hiring Tyronn Lue last week before the former Cleveland Cavaliers coach reportedly rejected an $18-million, three-year contract.
