Richard Jefferson's 65-year-old father, Richard Jefferson Sr., was shot and killed in a drive-by shooting Wednesday evening in Compton, California, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

The shooting reportedly occurred outside of a liquor store at 6:52 p.m., with Jefferson Sr. being struck multiple times in his torso after a vehicle rolled up and one of the passengers opened fire, law enforcement informed TMZ.com.

He was taken to a nearby hospital and was later pronounced dead.

Detectives continue to investigate, with the motive behind the shooting still unclear.

Jefferson grew up with his mother in Glendale, Arizona after his parents split, although he and his father's relationship had reportedly grown stronger in recent years, according to ESPN's Dave McMenamin.

The 38-year-old veteran made 20 appearances last season with the Denver Nuggets, averaging 1.5 points off the bench. He won his first and only championship in 2016 with the Cleveland Cavaliers and currently serves as an on-air analyst for multiple networks.
