Sixers' Zhaire Smith underwent surgery to repair foot fracture

The Philadelphia 76ers announced rookie Zhaire Smith underwent surgery to repair an acute Jones fracture of the fifth metatarsal in his left foot on Thursday. The team didn't provide a timetable for his recovery.

Smith suffered the injury during Tim Grgurich's development camp on Monday.

The 16th overall selection in this year's draft is the fifth 76ers rookie since 2013 to miss significant time due to an injury. That list includes 2018 Rookie of the Year Ben Simmons, who sat out the entire 2016-17 season with the same injury as Smith.

The 19-year-old was not a highly touted prospect prior to his freshman year at Texas Tech. The versatile swingman rose up the ranks as one of the key players in the Red Raiders' run to the Elite Eight in 2018.

He averaged 11.3 points, five boards, and over one steal and block per game during his single college season.
