Charles Barkley is calling on his home state to vote for Democratic nominee Doug Jones in the Alabama Senate race over Republican Roy Moore, due in part to his disbelief that the latter is still in the running after allegations of sexual assault from underage women.

"This is unbelievable to me," Barkley told AL.com's John Archibald. "You couldn't make it up.

"If somebody sent you a script, with all he's done and said, you wouldn't believe he could still be in the race."

A native of Leeds, Ala., the 54-year-old retired NBA star attended a campaign event in Birmingham on Monday to publicly rally fellow Alabamans to support Jones in Tuesday's special election, urging them to change what he believes is a negative perception of the state.

"I am begging and urging everybody to get out, call all your friends. We gotta, at some point, we gotta stop looking like idiots to the nation," he said.
