Report: Kendrick Perkins invited to Cavaliers training camp

David Richard-USA TODAY Sports

Kendrick Perkins has been biding his time, waiting for an opportunity to make his way back into the NBA, and now he appears to have one - as small as it may be - with his former team.

The Cleveland Cavaliers invited the 32-year-old big man to attend training camp next week, sources told Cleveland.com's Joe Vardon.

He's unlikely to earn a roster spot, though, as the Cavaliers already have a full roster of 15 players under guaranteed contracts. They're also $18.6 million over the luxury tax. While Cleveland could make a cut to create room for him, it would cost the franchise a ton of money to do so.

Perkins was a member of the 2014-15 Cavaliers after being waived by the Utah Jazz. He made 17 appearances in an extremely limited role, averaging 2.6 points and 2.4 rebounds in just under 10 minutes per game.

He recently told The Boston Globe's Gary Washburn that he was hopeful someone would extend him a training-camp invite so he could show the world he still had something to offer on the hardwood.

Perkins was also present at LeBron James' minicamp in Santa Barbara, Calif., on Thursday.
