The impasse between Chauncey Billups and the Cleveland Cavaliers over giving the former player the title of general manager took another turn Wednesday, with word that Billups has sent Cavs owner Dan Gilbert a counteroffer, according to ESPN's Jeff Goodman.

The last report on the situation was that "no immediate resolution" was expected between the two sides.

The Cavaliers operated through the draft and now the pre-free-agency period without a formal general manager. Gilbert and David Griffin parted ways June 19.

Billups retired as a player in 2014 and has no NBA front-office experience. He's close with Cavs coach Tyronn Lue, and has been working as a broadcaster with ABC/ESPN.
