Masvidal already planning trilogy bout with Usman

If Jorge Masvidal gets past Kamaru Usman at UFC 261, fans can apparently count on "Gamebred" to give the welterweight champion an immediate rematch.

"When I win the rematch, we definitely will go for the trilogy because I will not go down in history 1-1 with this individual," Masvidal said Tuesday during a fan Q-and-A, according to MMA Junkie's Mike Bohn. "It's just not going to happen."

Masvidal challenged Usman for the belt on six days' notice at UFC 251 last July and fell short in a lopsided decision. The 36-year-old hasn't stepped into the Octagon since then, but he will get an opportunity to avenge the loss on April 24 in Jacksonville. Usman, 33, is coming off a TKO win over Gilbert Burns in February.

Masvidal said the difference in the upcoming rematch will be a less drastic weight cut.

"I'm not going to cut 20 pounds of weight now, mainly of water, in six days," he said. "As I stand right now, I'm eight, nine pounds before I hit the mark of 170. So it's a different weight cut altogether. That's going to be the main determining factor, I think."

UFC 261 is set to be the promotion's first event with a full crowd since the COVID-19 pandemic forced shutdowns across North America last March. It will feature two other title fights: Zhang Weili versus Rose Namajunas at strawweight and Valentina Shevchenko against Jessica Andrade at women's flyweight.
