The San Francisco Giants designated catcher Joey Bart for assignment, the club announced Sunday.

San Francisco selected Bart with the No. 2 pick in the 2018 MLB Draft. He was the club's top prospect in 2019-2020. Baltimore Orioles star backstop Adley Rutschman was the only catching prospect ranked higher at that point in time.

Bart was supposed to replace Giants legend Buster Posey behind the plate but never lived up to lofty expectations. The 27-year-old struggled in the majors after debuting in 2020, slashing .219/.288/.335 with 11 homers and 38 RBIs over a combined 162 games across four years. He hit all 11 of his round-trippers in 2022.

The team brought up right-hander Daulton Jefferies to take Bart's spot on the roster.
